Photon-IV Awarded Canadian Space Agency STDP to Advance Connectivity for Proliferated LEO Networks

Waterloo, Ontario — October 16, 2026 — Photon-IV Inc., a Canadian dual-use defence and space technology company, today announced it has been awarded a non-repayable contribution from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) under the Space Technology Development Program (STDP). The contribution will support the advancement of Photon-IV’s communications technology for proliferated low-Earth-orbit (pLEO) networks, enabling more reliable and efficient connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and remote operations where terrestrial networks are limited or unavailable.

Improving Connectivity for Remote IoT Applications

Photon-IV is developing technology that helps IoT devices connect more efficiently via low-Earth-orbit satellites. Today, devices in remote locations often waste power searching for satellites that are not available, which shortens battery life and creates data gaps. The company’s work aims to reduce unnecessary radio activity and improve the reliability of data delivery for applications such as Arctic environmental monitoring and other remote sensing uses.

The CSA contribution will support the advancement and field demonstration of this technology. The work is aligned with emerging non-terrestrial network standards and is intended to support more efficient use of Canadian LEO capacity.

Why This Matters

The number of satellites in low-Earth orbit is growing rapidly, and more IoT devices are expected to rely on satellite connectivity in the years ahead. Improving how these devices connect can extend battery life, reduce data gaps, and support operations in northern and remote regions of Canada where terrestrial networks are limited.

Photon-IV’s technology has been independently validated at the O-RAN Alliance Global Plugfest at Virginia Tech’s Commonwealth Cyber Initiative xG Testbed, in collaboration with Keysight Technologies.

“The contribution provided through the Canadian Space Agency’s Space Technology Development Program will support the development of intelligent communications technologies intended to enhance connectivity in remote and challenging environments. Photon-IV is pleased to pursue this work in Canada and recognizes the support provided through this program.”
